Near Islands Pattaya

Pattaya Near Island Chain - Ko Larn, Koh Sak, and Koh Krok are Pattaya's nearest islands for beach activities but which is best for coral snorkeling and deep diving?

Besides being the most popular, the Pattaya Near Islands are quite predictably the closest to the mainland. All three near isles take less than an hour to reach by boat and the largest and most visited of the Pattaya near islands is Koh Larn - or Coral Island.

Pattaya Island Koh Sak

Snorkeling - The two smaller pinnacles to visit near Pattaya are Koh Sak and Ko Krok. They are said to resemble cooking utensils which is how they derived their names. Koh Sak is shaped similar to the large vessel used for crushing food substance and hence is nick-named 'Mortar Island'.

Koh Sak Trips are nearer six kilometers from the mainland and are very popular with water sport enthusiasts and you will find jet-skis and other surface traffic zipping nearby.

We try to avoid this site because of this reason but the benefits of heading here are the easy access to the sites for snorkelers and the protection from the south-west monsoon weather.

The reef crops in this area provide underwater homes for rabbit fish, small octopus, moray eels, turtles, butterfly fish, wrasse, damsel fish, and saltwater angelfish.

Pattaya Island Koh Larn

Pattaya Nearby Island - Ko LarnThere is a large golden sand bay on the west side and several smaller less tourist bays dotted nearby making it probably the best island to visit near Pattaya.

The boat captains will often head for Pattaya Near Island Koh Larn when the wind is strong or blowing from an adverse direction. Snorkel divers might see blue spotted stingrays in the sand, turtles nibbling on the corals, or tawny nurse sharks sleeping around the hard coral rock formations.

Although we don't often choose this site for our snorkeling activities, the advantage it has is the shelter that it provides from the wind and waves due to its large land mass. The distance from Pattaya to Koh Larn is nearly seven kilometers which typically takes 45 minutes from Pattaya Port by boat.

Pattaya Island Koh Krok

Snorkeling - A finger-shaped crop that is often chosen as the last snorkel site of the day because of its closeness to Pattaya. It is known locally as 'Pestle Island' because of its resemblance to the tool used in cookery.

We usually head for the west side of this isolated nearby island where we almost always find sea turtles, clown fish, anemones, and nudibranchs.
